The Chiang Mai, which opened its gates in 1977, was the very first commercial zoo to appear in Northern Thailand, and presently is home to more than 400 different species of animals.

The Beginning of Chiang Mai Zoo
It started off during the 1950s when specialists from the US government were sent to train tribal policemen. Harold Mason Young was one of these specialists and he began to care for injured animals he came across, and his collection eventually started attracting a significant amount of attention.
From a Private Collection to a Full Blown Zoo
Following Young’s death, ownership of the zoo was transferred to the province of Chiang Mai who developed it into the iconic zoo. It’s nearby to many hotels in Chiang Mai such as the Anantara Chiang Mai Resort and attracts visitors from all over the region.
The Animal Occupants

There is a spectacular range of animals to be witnessed at the Chiang Mai Zoo, including the only rhino in all of Thailand. Additionally the zoo includes hippos, camels, ostriches, and a couple of giant pandas. The aquatic creatures the zoo features encompass Cafe Fur Seals and Humboldt Penguins.
Getting Around Chiang Mai Zoo
The zoo is spread out over two hundred acres of land but navigating it is quite easy since vehicles are allowed into the zoo, and guests even have access to an overhead tram service.
